Junior entry, four year starter. Honorable mention All-Big 10 in 2022 and 2023. Brother of NFL receiver Bo Melton. Has good size for the position. Versatile corner with experience as an overhang player/slot corner and outside corner. Often used to match opponents' best receiver. Experience in multiple concepts including off and press man along with outside quarters, hard corner, and cover three. As a press corner, can be physical with a stiff two hand jam to disrupt the release. In a reactive press, will show an off-hand jam on an outside release. Quick feet and agility allow him to react to double moves and easily flip his hips to turn and run. Flashes ability to stay in phase throughout the route and normally keeps his focus on the receiver. In off coverage shows a quick-footed pedal or lateral shuffle prior to turn and run if route is vertical. Excellent zone defender. Inside he passes crossers and gets depth on intermediate routes. As a hard corner, he positions well between intermediate and flat routes. Gets a good read on the quarterback with the play in front of him and can find the throwing lane. Tough at the catch point he’s made some big hits and pass breaks. Has recovery speed if separated and is adept at playing receiver’s hands coming from behind. Excellent run defender attacking blocks with strong hands and can shed on the move. Notable tackling skill, he can wrap and drive and make plays in space. Tall back pedal can be a hindrance breaking on the ball as there is the occasional false step on plant and drive. He will sneak a peek in man cover, sometimes letting a receiver get behind him. Versatility a plus as he has excellent nickel potential and will fit most teams.
