Ourlads' Profile:
2019 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about DARNELL SAVAGE JR: Maryland, 5106 198 4.36. Three year starter from Newark, DE. Most often a one high safety but also played two high coverage along with rotating down to the box. Fluid movements with initial read and pedal. Sudden in transition. Instinctive moving downhill with precise adjustments to cut off running angles. High motor aggressive player against the run attacking blocks with knee bend and a compact punch and shed. Solid tackling skill with easy conversion from chase to gather. Normally squares up tackles and often delivers a big hit. Quick to flip his hips on a centerfield turn. Has the speed to stay over the top of vertical routes and prevent the big play. Has a burst to break and close on pass plays in front of him. In under coverage consistently played the high low patterns getting in the throwing lane on intermediate routes and playing up to flat releases. Displays playmaking skill with solid ball skills. Attacks the catch point or limits gains after the catch. Shows match up skill on a slot with ability to mirror route breaks and stay in phase on a vertical pattern. Lateral transitions are outstanding. Has some corner skill and got some reps during Senior Bowl practices. Has some inconsistency as he will at times get tunnel vision in coverage and lose sight of multiple routes. Some occasional minor hang up in transition but recovery ability minimizes this. Occasionally loses focus on a tackle going for the big hit. Lacks optimal size for a deep safety and may have some trouble with taller receivers working the catch point. He has versatility to play a number of roles and could see time over a slot in sub packages. With his speed and tackling ability he should be a major contributor on special teams. 2018 stats: 52 T, 5.5 TFL, 2 PBU, 4 INT (1 TD). BTR:left 4.90, right 5.07. OSR:6/24. Third/fourth round.
