Ourlads' Profile:
2020 Guide: What Ourlads' Scouting Services said about BRANDON JONES: Texas, 5111 198 4.50. Three-year starter, Nacogdoches, TX. Second-team All-Big 12 in 2019. The versatile safety has played in the box, on a slot, and one and two high in his career. Plays with a high motor and linebacker-like toughness. Tracks and adjusts downhill from deep or box safety with range in pursuit. Can chase across the field and maintain backside leverage. Takes on and sheds blocks on the move with an explosive strike creating separation. Has fundamental tackling skill with gather and powerful finish. Can lay a hit. Shows quick lateral agility and can make plays in space. As a deep safety is quick in his pedal and has the speed to play deep half and third. Can match a vertical route up the seam. Flips his hips to get over the top in deep coverage and find the ball. Played more over a slot in 2019 and showed up well as a flat defender with depth and width in drop. Route recognition is inconsistent over the top as he can get caught out of position versus multiple routes. One concern is lack of consistent ball skills. While often in position does not consistently find the ball and will give up a catch. Will occasionally under play a ball. Has been outstanding on special teams in the past including aggressive kick coverage with range and tackling ability. Has also blocked two kicks. Length is not ideal but he has the skill of a starting safety with the possibility of playing the nickel/hybrid spot. 2019 stats: 86 T, 4.5 TFL, 1 sack, 4 PBU, 1 FF, 2 INT. Medical exclusion at Combine. Fourth/fifth round. (A-30 1/8, H-8 3/4, VJ-DNP, SS-DNP).
