Ourlads' Profile:
2022 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about SAM HOWELL:
North Carolina, 6005 218 4.79. Three-year starter, Indian Trail, NC. Freshman All-America in 2019, ACC Offensive and Overall Rookie of the Year. At times he displays a strong pocket presence, along with subtle pocket movements, but he tends to be statuesque in the pocket with a tendency to climb the pocket with his shoulder pads square with the line of scrimmage. Shows tendency to fall off to the left on deeper throws. Displays impressive leadership skills and makes good decisions. Will overextend when he feels pressure in his face, which leads to off target passes with the ball on the rise. A shorter quarterback who has athletic ability to contribute in the run game, but not really an astute improviser. Extremely quick in resetting his base in run/pass option situations. Highly accurate in run/pass option and quick game scenarios, less so in intermediate throws. Highly competitive and physical when running the ball, has some ball security issues and shows a tendency to hold on to the ball too long when scrambling outside of the pocket. Has very good arm strength and an extremely quick release. Oftentimes able to extend plays by strength rather than sheer athleticism and speed, however far too often he ends up dropping his front shoulder in anticipation of escaping defenders, eliminating the threat of a passer. Displayed the ability to be a competent game manager of sorts and at least be a reliable backup.
2021 stats: 214/347, 3056 yds, 62.5%, 24 TD, 9 INT, 829 yds rushing, 11 TD, 154.2 QB rating. Ball velocity 56 mph. Second/third round. (A-30 3/4, H-9 1/8, VJ-DNP, SS-DNP).
