Ourlads' Profile:
2019 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about DAVID LONG JR: West Virginia, 5112 227 4.65. Junior entry from Cincinnati, OH. Two year starter. Undersized quick twitch linebacker with good instincts. Played Will in the West Virginia 3-3-5 defense. He projects as a 4-3 or 3-4 Will in the NFL with hybrid potential on the edge. Quick in movements with sudden stop/start reactions. Shows change of direction skill with the ability to quickly recover if out of position. Aggressive at the snap with downhill ability fitting inside gaps. Makes a lot of plays in the backfield. Explosive attacking blocks with the ability to redirect off a block if leveraged. Shoots his hands and plays with knee bend. Avoids blocks while maintaining pursuit angle. Solid playing speed with good chase ability. Will align out of the box on occasion and does a nice job defending the perimeter on outside runs and screens. Displays match up skill on backs showing mirror ability and speed to cover deep. Zone drops are deliberate but he closes quickly with the ball in the air. Quick with the blitz-anticipating the snap and closing in the backfield. The defensive scheme tends to protect him from blockers and he will freelance at times and get caught out of position. If uncovered struggles to take on bigger blockers as he can get bounced inline. Inconsistent in coverage awareness as he will focus in the backfield and not see threats. Needs to be in the right scheme. Has kick coverage ability and should be a factor on special teams. 2018 stats: 111 T, 19 TFL, 7 sacks, 4 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FF. Did not work out at Combine. Fifth/sixth round. (A-30 3/4, H-10, BP-18, SS-DNP).
