Junior entry, three-year starter, Independence, KY. A two-time All America who rewrote the Notre Dame record book, finishing atop the program’s all-time tight end ranking list in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. An every down threat, Mayer possesses every tool in the box to fit the prototypical Y tight end role. His specialty will undoubtedly reside in the passing game where he can pose as a major matchup problem for defenses. Has the length, bulk, and coordination to win in contested situations and enough size to break through cheap tackle attempts after the catch. Is a safe week one starter at the next level with as much upside as we have seen out of any tight end from the historic program. Pro-caliber frame in every sense. Distributed strength, power, and bulk. Can handle blocking duties both inline and at the second level. Carries a receiver-caliber skill set once the ball is in the air. Gives matchup problems to defensive backs and linebackers via different avenues. Out-muscles smaller defenders with body positioning and sheer power. Plays wide and long. Gets open underneath with efficient footwork and route running mechanics that are clearly refined. Sturdy blocker with a strong initial punch and excellent power presence. Needs to show more sustained contact as a blocker. Too often one hit and done as his assignment gets involved in the action. Lacks dynamic movement traits after the catch. Will play tight and lacks creativity at times. Does not have enough speed to pose as a downfield threat. Much of his production was manufactured. A reliable player who brings a high floor to the position and will be a quality, versatile starter early in his career.
