Two year starter, Lehigh Acres, FL. Second team All-Big 10 in 2022. A five year player for the Illini with significant sub package and special team play prior to becoming a full-time starter in 2021. Versatile player who has played corner, overhang or slot corner and safety. In 2022 was primarily an overhang player on a slot but had significant safety reps including one high. Has experience in multiple zone coverage both in the box and in the deep zones. As an overhang player shows a smooth open to the flat and can get under intermediate routes. Also has the speed to align as an overhang and get over the top outside as a swap with a corner. Processes route combinations and normally takes solid angles to close throwing windows. As a deep safety has the playing speed to get over the top playing one high with excellent range. In man coverage shows a stiff jam to disrupt a vertical release and has the speed to stay with deep routes. In run support he can avoid and slip blocks on the move and is a secure wrap and drag tackler. While he’s not stiff he doesn’t show sudden change of direction and can be a little slow flipping his hips in a short space. Playing one high his pedal tends to be upright and a little segmented. Reactions out of his break are slightly late at times. Some of this is correctable with more reps as a deep safety. He lacks ideal size but his length is solid. His versatility will be attractive as a quality backup/core special team player. Has been effective on all the special teams at Illinois.
2022 Stats: 64 T, 3 TFL, 1 sack, 11 PBU, 1 QBH, 2 FF, 3 INT. OSR:5/20. 3rd/4th round.
