Two year starter, Lakewood, CA. All-Pac 12 first team and consensus All-America in 2022. Somewhat undersized for an outside corner Phillips has excelled both outside and slot corner. Extreme athleticism and incredible quickness in reactions. Plays bigger than his size showing an uncanny ability to find the catch point. Has been ultra productive getting his hands on balls. Experienced in a variety of techniques including off man, outside zone and press man. Textbook fundamentals and footwork of backpedal, lateral run, and turn and run. In off coverage adjusts to receiver’s tempo to stay in phase through route breaks, change of speed and deep vertical release. Mirrors receiver’s movement and flips, tough to shake. Sudden to break on the ball with no wasted movement. Has a big catch radius and can go up and get the ball against taller receivers. Consistently times his leap to attack the catch point even if beaten by a step. Adept at a reactive press technique he can also flash a two or off-hand jam on the release. Rarely gives up leverage. As a zone defender he reads the delivery key and gets an incredible plant and drive with the ball in the air. In the slot can align inside and get under an intermediate throw outside the numbers. Very active in run support and pursuit. Quick feet gets him through blocks and he consistently makes tackles in space. Sound tackling skill with gather, strike and finish. Has been an effective blitzer from the slot. Will occasionally lose eye discipline and sneak a peek at the quarterback and lose the receiver. Can get too hands-on with the ball in the air at times. Height disadvantage occasionally shows versus a tall receiver. Height issues aside, his tools are elite.
