Four year starter, Memphis, TN. Three year captain at Indiana who started his career as a safety. Has the intangibles that teams desire. Somewhat linear but muscular frame with decent length for an inside backer. Outstanding movement skills he has twitch and sudden change of direction to go with explosiveness coming downhill. He was a developing player as far as read and react and was showing huge strides before an injury sidelined him five games into the season. Takes fundamental read steps with patience to fit inside gaps. Once he “sees it” he is quick getting downhill. Flashes ability to take on blocks with quick hands and knee bend. Has shown effectiveness getting ball side leverage and slipping blocks on the move. Relentless in pursuit he has range to chase from sideline to sideline. Explosive and secure tackler, he gathers and drives through tackles dropping ball carriers in their tracks. In coverage he can match and mirror backs with the eye discipline to keep focus on the back through route breaks. Has the speed to cover a release up the field. As a zone defender flashes ability to process route combinations. Normally gets depth in his drop, and finds the throwing lane under intermediate routes. That said he can be a little slow reading pass and pass drop depth suffers as a result. Showed improvement right before his injury. Has some problems with climbing interior blockers and can get walled off and driven out inline. Needs better hand usage to separate from blocks. He’s still a developmental prospect but showed well at the Senior Bowl. Has special team value and three down potential.
