Three-year starter, Owings Mills, MD. Second-team All-Big 10 last season, first team in 2021 and honorable mention in 2020. Interior defensive lineman with good height and a massive lower body. Plays best as a zero-tech where he can play head-up in a two-gap scheme. Great explosiveness off the line-of-scrimmage with a quick first step. When head-up, will engage with violence and strong hands. Displays a sturdy anchor to give up minimal ground, will consistently stalemate offensive linemen at the line-of-scrimmage against both gap and zone schemes. While anchoring, will vision the ball carrier in the backfield, and shows the ability to efficiently shed and show up in his gap. When shaded, will burst off the ball with low pad level and shoot his gap to leverage his run responsibility immediately. Shows great contact balance to stay upright when he gets chipped. Shows proper tackling form both in the trenches and in space. High motor player who is hungry to make plays. Displays great athletic ability especially considering his size. Can seamlessly shift gaps with exceptional lateral agility and foot quickness in stunts. When bumped out to the edge, shows good cornering ability with quality bend. Needs to be more consistent with his burst off the ball. Can hold the point versus double teams for a split-second, but will get driven off the ball. While he does stalemate offensive linemen at the line-of-scrimmage, he struggles to create push and gain depth in the backfield. Slow reaction time when getting blocked down on, and can get washed out of plays in these situations. Lacks creativity in pass rush, limited ways to win and put pressure on the quarterback. Needs a pass rush plan going into every rep. Needs better hand usage; in pass rush, often flails his arms rather than utilizing a move to win. Shows potential to develop into a starting NFL nose tackle.
