2023 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about XAVIER SMITH:
Florida A&M | H: 5091 W: 174 40: 4.48 A: 2914 H: 0900 W: 7118
Four-year starter, Haines City, FL. His 2020 season was canceled due to Covid-19. A former walk-on who became a two-time FCS All-America and three-time All-MEAC selection. Smith is an off the radar prospect but one of the most productive receivers in college football throughout his career. Possesses a tiny frame for an NFL wide receiver in terms of height, weight, and overall length. Solid explosiveness at the line-of-scrimmage with great acceleration to increase his foot speed quickly after he gets going. Can win on his release by making defensive backs open up early using quick feet so he can cut underneath them. A sharp route runner who can put his foot in the ground and change direction abruptly to create separation from defensive backs. Great mental processing ability helps him manipulate defenders all over the field to separate. Soft, reliable hands at the catch point and rarely drops the ball. Good sideline awareness to make catches while tapping his toes in-bounds to secure the completion. Fluid hips and overall great athletic ability help him adjust around his frame and make catches in his strike zone. Will accelerate in space to pick up significant yards after the catch. Fringe functional strength; can get stalled out at the line-of-scrimmage versus press. Very small catch radius hinders his ability to extend and make catches away from his body. Struggles to secure contested catches while fighting off defenders. While he does accelerate quickly, he lacks breakaway speed, which along with his length will limit his ability as a deep threat. He has kick return skill which could help earn him a spot.
