Three-year starter, Lewis Center, OH. Honorable mention All-Big 10 this past season, 2021 first-team All-Big 10. Long, well-built interior defensive lineman with a strong upper body and tree trunk legs. Fits best as a one-tech in a 4-3 one-gap scheme. Fire off the line like a cannonball, especially on passing downs, and immediately puts significant pressure on the offensive line. Gets off the ball with low pad level. Shows great physical toughness to engage violently, and will knock back linemen from the start. When he reads run, will sink his hips and anchor down. Creates extension with proper hand placement, and peaks in his gap to find the ball carrier. Uses exceptional hand strength and consistent placement to shed blocks and shuck linemen to the ground to leverage his gap. On heavy passing downs he will explode off the ball and engage with brute force to collapse the pocket. Utilizes considerable hip fluidity and agility while stunting to shift gaps, and finishes with a strong rip move. Can win as a pass rusher inside or shift to the edge using solid cornering ability. Uses quick swipes to keep linemen’s hands off of him and allow him to charge into the backfield. Fights to get to the ball carrier every single play using a relentless motor. Needs to improve his ability to take on double teams to be a reliable one-tech, as he will get driven off the line-of-scrimmage regularly in these situations. Needs to work on playing under control and settle down; will vacate his gap trying too hard to make a play. Has a solid foundation and a strong motor, but does not stand out in many areas.
2022 Stats: 20 T, 3.5 TFL, .5 sack, 2 QBH, 1 BK. 4th/5th round.
