2024 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about KALEN KING:
Penn State | HT: 5112 | WT: 191 | 40 time: 4.61 | Arm: 3078 | Hand: 0834 | Wing: 7414
Junior entry, two year starter. Second-team All-Big 10 in 2023. Average corner size with solid athletic traits for a corner. Has been primarily a field corner with experience in multiple coverage. In press he rarely gives up leverage and shows eye discipline keeping his focus on the receiver. Smooth movement with solid footwork in most transitions. In off coverage he often plays with a big cushion but is sudden reacting with the ball in the air. Doesn’t let receivers get on him as he times transitions to stay over the top and in phase on vertical routes. Solid zone defender showing ability to balance multiple routes and close voids in zones. Has a knack for reading the delivery key and breaking on the ball. Led the Big 10 in pass breaks with 21 in 2022. Very good ball skills with consistency attacking the catch point. Willing in run support he can defeat stalk blocks and is aggressive tackling. That said, he tends to go low on tackles and doesn’t always wrap up. Tackling fundamentals are suspect. Inconsistent with angles to the ball as he can be overaggressive and under or overrun the play. Can get tall in his pedal at times causing a stall in his reactions. Turn and run can be segmented causing him to play from behind. Recovery speed is not elite and speed receivers can get behind him and stay there. Gives up a little too much room underneath at times. King is a puzzling player as he was hyper productive in 2022 but fell off in 2023 as some holes in his game showed up. He has tools to play, but may need to be in a scheme that is zone heavy.
2023 Stats: 29 T, 1.5 TFL, 2 PBU. OSR:29/30. Draft projection: 5th-7th round
