Ourlads' Profile:
2022 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about LEON O’NEAL JR.:
Texas A&M, 6004 204 4.55. Three-year starter, Cypress, TX. Has good size and football IQ for the position. Has played primarily as a deep one and two high safety with some reps dropping to the box. Has a smooth pedal to maintain cushion and flashes range in the deep zones to get over the top of vertical routes. Shows zone awareness reacting to pattern pressure while getting a read on the quarterback’s intentions. High points interception opportunities with extension to the catch point and soft hands. Tracks quickly downhill with the play in front of him and normally adjusts his angle to leverage a ball carrier. Decent take-on skill he can slip blocks on the move. Flashes fundamental tackling skill with gather and finish. At times will underrun the ball and miss a tackle. Overall inconsistent in run support. Hip tightness shows in lateral transitions as there is occasional hang up changing direction. When matched up, shows functional speed to run with most inside receivers but at times a fast receiver can run by him. He’s not going to stick with a shifty receiver on multiple route breaks. Has been too easily separated as a route is extended. There is some upside as he has improved his zone coverage and flashed playmaking ability. Will need to play well on special teams to make a team.
