Ourlads' Profile:
2020 Guide: What Ourlads' Scouting Services said about ANTHONY MCFARLAND JR: Maryland, 5081 208 4.44. Third year sophomore entry, two-year starter, Hyattsville, MD. Shared backfield duties both seasons. Was recruited by Alabama but a broken leg his senior year of high school caused them to back off. Settled on Maryland and after a redshirt year in 2017, set a school record for rushing yards by a freshman with 1,034 yards including a stunning 298 against Ohio State. Finished second-team All Big 10 that season. Last season didn’t go as planned, as Maryland really struggled to get any sort of rhythm going on that side of the ball. He isn’t an every-down back, but can be one of the most dangerous threats in the league if used correctly. Has elite burst and agility with the ball in his hands and will run away from pursuers in space. There is more strength and balance to his game than people think and considering he touched the ball just under 275 times, he comes in with fresh wheels. Potential draft-altering pick for a team. Shoots out of a cannon. Top tier acceleration and burst that will reach his runaway speed in an instant. Can explode through a crease. Stays square to the line on outside runs, ready to pounce in any direction at any given moment. Overlooked lower body strength and power that creates speed and explosion. The rate at which he can move when turning and twisting is elite. Plays faster than the defense at all times. A natural pass catcher who will bring the ball in late and set himself up for yards after the catch. The suddenness and acrobatic movement while moving at his full speed is a weapon at any given moment. Can see all the cutback options in space and will make quick decisions. Goes down on initial contact too often. Will play small when he is in traffic. Toughness isn’t an every down trait of his, doesn’t always run hungry. Not an effective between the tackles runner. Blocking lacks both initial and staying power. Won’t attach his hands to the pass rusher. Ball security was a major issue in 2018. Carries the ball too low and allows it to get away from his body. 2019 stats: 614 yds, 5.4 ypc, 8 TD, 17 rec, 126 yds, 7.4 ypr, 1 TD. OSR:14/ 33. Third/fourth round. (A-30 3/8, H-8 7/8, BP-DNP, SS-DNP).
