After two years of being in and out of the lineup with back and forth levels of play, Speaks broke out in his fourth year on campus. He was the defensive front’s Swiss army knife as he saw time as a defensive tackle, defensive end, outside rush linebacker, and inside blitzing linebacker. The hybrid athlete uses a unique blend of tools to pose as a match-up problem for most blockers. At 280+ pounds, Speaks has good reaction speed, easy foot movement, and a quick first step. He is equally athletic in space and in traffic. There is a tenacity to his play that is always on. While the techniques and mental awareness need further development, he will play with the attitude of ‘through the whistle’ with a bully’s mentality. He loves to play physical. His pop at the point of attack is always violent. Makes tackles all over the field and when he hits the ball carrier, they know it. He struggles with the consistency of hand placement and leverage. Exposes too much of his chest to the blocker and is often inaccurate with his post-engagement hands. Instincts are off. Too often he is fooled by fakes and counters. There needs to be more discipline added to his game. Best suited for a gap shooting interior pass rusher that can be moved around in exotic looks.
