Iowa State, 6040 245 4.85. Four-year starter, Brecksville, OH. First-team All-Big 12 the past two seasons, first-team Phil Steele All-America in 2020. Physical player with excellent size and length for the position. Has experience playing on the edge, and off the ball inside and outside. Physical downhill player, he is quick with key diagnose and comes downhill hard. Attacks blocks with knee bend and strong hands. Powerful to stack and shed bigger blockers. Instinctive with inside run fits he can beat blocking schemes reacting at the hole. Does well protecting backside gaps. Above average zone defender with ability to get depth in his drop under intermediate routes. Quick to break on the throw, he attacks the catch point and had five interceptions in 2020. At his best as an underneath hook flat defender. Has been an effective blitzer with anticipation at the snap and ability to defeat blocks. Explosive tackler faced up but has trouble with movement by a ball carrier. Will miss versus agile and fast backs in space. Lacks ideal range and can come up short in pursuit as the play moves outside. Lacks the burst for range to the perimeter. Lateral movement is a little segmented. Struggles in man coverage and is too easily separated on route breaks. Limited range in zone coverage as the play is extended. Has some excellent linebacker traits and could play Sam in a 4-3 or inside in a scheme that keeps him as a tackle-to-tackle run stuffer. Will need to play special teams.
