From a walk-on backup quarterback at Texas Tech to one of the most accomplished signal callers ever at Oklahoma, it’s been anything but a direct path for Baker Mayfield  The fifth-year senior won the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award in 2013, but lost his starting job a year later.  He opted to leave for Oklahoma and it proved to be a decision that has set him up very well for his NFL career.  After two All-America seasons, Mayfield is now one of the frontrunners for this year’s Heisman Trophy.  The Houdini-type playmaker is surging at the right time and could end up being the top quarterback in this class.

What He Does Well:

Mayfield’s most attractive traits revolve around his intangibles.  He is a leader in every sense of the word, the kind of guy you want leading a group of men.  His confidence, swagger, moxie, whatever you want to call it, elevates his level of play and those around him in high pressure situations.  There is ice water in his veins and there isn’t anyone I would rather give the ball to in comparison to the other quarterbacks in this class.  He is a top tier athlete who uses his quick feet to avoid pressure while keeping his eyes downfield.  The mobility in and out of the pocket is pro-caliber, as he can blend his athleticism and awareness of the game.  His progress as a pocket thrower has made enormous strides, as he is experienced going through progressions while looking off defenders.  The arm power and accuracy are more than good enough.

Where He Needs Work:

Mayfield’s biggest weakness isn’t going anywhere.  His height can be a problem when trying to make his reads behind NFL linemen from the pocket.  While he isn’t below any sort of minimum standard, he does lack ideal size.  Mayfield also has some loose-cannon in him when it comes to making decisions.  There are times he needs to take what the defense gives him, throw the ball away, and not take as many hits from tacklers.  There have been multiple incidents where he has let the emotion of the game bring out the worst in his attitude, as well.
