After winning “Mr. Alabama” in high school, a major feat in and of itself, running back Kerryon Johnson arrived to a crowded Auburn backfield. Future NFL draft pick Peyton Barber and fellow classmate Kamryn Pettway both had their respective hot streaks that kept Johnson from ever really getting number one duties for a consistent period. However he took the bull by the horns in 2017, winning the team’s offensive MVP award after rushing for 1,320 yards and 17 touchdowns. Despite hurting his shoulder late in the year, he plans to play in their upcoming bowl game against Central Florida.
What He Does Well:
Incredible looseness and flexibility from the waist down. Rare change of direction for such a high-hipped runner. Top tier vision and decision making. Sees the whole field and can manipulate the defense with hesitation and patience. Times his bursts and turns very well. Does a nice job of missing contact, the meat of a hit. Late movement and quick reactions lead to that. Toughness is there. Will play through pain and won’t let it alter his approach to the game and his role. Excellent blocker, can stay on the field and be depended upon against blitzers inside and out.
Where He Needs Work:
Likes to run high. Needs to be more consistent with his pad level and making the effort to drive his legs on contact. His frame may have a hard time holding up against NFL tacklers who like to attack the lower body. Can be an injury risk. Won’t push a lot of piles in the NFL, doesn’t always fall forward. May be a little too patient, not assertive, in certain situations where there are lanes to run through. Doesn’t always keep the ball tight to his body.
